General Information

Project: “Monitoring the effect that precipitation events have on the water quality of sources for drinking water supply in the city of Panama”

SENACYT Code: Project COL07-036

Introduction

The main contribution of this project will be to improve the level of knowledge about the effect that rainfall events have on water quality. This research will be carried out in two of the four water supply sources located in the metropolitan area of Panama City, specifically those relating to the Cabra and Pacora Rivers. In addition, this study will develop techniques for water quality monitoring in rivers, using automatic water samplers (AWS) and a telemetric warning system.

Justificación:

  • In many of the 52 surface water intake sites for drinking water in Panama, the flow rate and river levels are not measured regularly.
  • This situation combined with extreme rain events have an immediate impact over drinking water treatment plants, making authorities to react to a critical situation (not always appropriate) rather than prevent them.  prevention.

Duration:

  • Two years, divided into three phases of 8 months each.

Participating institutions

  • CIHH-UTP
  • Civil Engineering School, Purdue University. (IN-USA).
