Student Oriented Activities

UTP students visited Cerro Pelado, Gamboa, to do soil testing..

The procedure of the test performed was as follows:
Percolation test with small disc infiltrometer.

    • Fill the bubble chamber, so the water runs down the control tube or remove the top cover.
    1. Note:
      1. Do not use distilled water.
      2. The land has water with solutes and clays with salts.
      3. Using distilled water creates changes in the ionic balance and could produce floccules or disperse clay in the soil.
    • Once the upper chamber has been filled out, passing the suction tube totally, put the infiltrometer upside down, remove the bottom part with the porous disc and fill out the reservoir with water.
    • Ensure that the pores of the disc are firmly in place.
    • If infiltration occurs, the meter is placed vertically, so the water does not escape.
    • Collect data

    Procedures

    • Setting the initial volume of water
    • At time zero, the Infiltrometer is placed on the surface, ensuring a firm contact with the soil surface.
    • Take the data volume at 30 seconds time intervals during the first 5 minutes. After that, every minute until a total time of 10 minutes, and then every 5 minutes until completing one hour or until there is no more water in the infiltrometer.
