Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) 2023-2024
The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarships provide students from post-secondary institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research at Canadian post-secondary institutions.
The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program is a Short-term Exchange Program under Global Affairs Canada’s International Scholarships Program.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be:
- a student enrolled full-time at post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory
- a student enrolled full-time at post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory
You are not eligible for this scholarship if:
- you hold or have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency
- you are already participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada
- you are already enrolled in a degree, diploma or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution
Scholarship value and Duration
The Canadian institution will receive funding from DFATD in the form of a non-negotiable contribution agreement and will be responsible for providing the funds to successful students according to its internal processes.

Eligible Expenses
Selected students may use scholarship funds towards:
- visa
- airfare via the most direct and economical route
- health insurance
- living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities and food
- ground transportation, including a public transportation pass
- books and supplies required for their study or research, excludin computers and other equipment
Application Process
Send to the email [email protected] the following documentation in English for your application:
- Copy of the candidate's passport or national identity card
- Signed Privacy Notice Statement for non-Canadian participants (PDF, 184.86 KB)
- Letter of intent from the candidate (maximum one page), it needs to explain the nature of studies or research to be undertaken and how the proposed program of study or research will relate to their future career.
- Letter of proof of full-time enrolment from the home institution, that confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program (on official letterhead)
- Letter of support from the home institution (maximum one page), from the candidate's instructor, proffesor that explains the nature of study or research to be undertaken in Canada and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program (on official letterhead)
- Signed copy of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or Agreement with the partner institution, where it indicates that tuition fees will not be charged and highlights this specific clause
- Formulario Interno de la UTP al Exterior (WORD, 60.62 KB) (We recommend contacting your Coordinator before sending all documents)
NOTE: *It is important that the required documents are sent separately in PDF files and each docuemnts must be smaller than 5 MB.
The UTP International Affairs Office will be in charge of sending your application to the Canadian Universities offering the scholarship and will notify the candidate directly if they are a beneficiary.
The Canadian universities that offer scholarships to UTP for mobility internships are:
- Memorial University of Newfounland (until March 15th, 2023)
