Education and awareness are crucial for managing global change and reducing biodiversity vulnerability, with higher education linking research, education, and innovation. There is an urgent need for professionals with integrative skills and the ability to communicate across fields. The rise in green jobs, driven by international actions, could create up to 500,000 jobs, but a skills imbalance exists due to a lack of integrative higher education programs that transition students from fundamental ecology to practical solutions.

Programme Structure

The GLOBE EMJM Programme is scheduled over two academic years (120 ECTS). 

All courses will be taught in English.

Programme Mobility

Mobility is key to the GLOBE master programme. It enriches the academic contents and provides transversal skills and diverse cultural experience to prepare highly versatile students. Students embark on their GLOBE journey and stay together for all study periods expect for the master thesis, maintaining a sense of community throughout the entire course.

The EMJM initiative requires that students spend two mobility periods (30 ECTS minimum in each mobility) in countries different to their country of residence at the time of enrolment. In the GLOBE EMJM, the first, second and third semesters are independent mobility periods, as their duration is in all cases at least 30 ECTS. This mobility scheme guarantees the minimum of two mobility periods for each student, regardless of the country of residence of the student.

Degrees Awarded

Successful GLOBE graduates will obtain multiple master degrees from the three institutions from Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Bangor University and Universidade de Lisboa. Students who carry out their master thesis at Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala will also receive a degree from this institution. The coordinating institution (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) will provide a European Diploma Supplement with the transcript of records, grades and credits.

The degrees awarded are:

• Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (España): Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Global Change Ecology and Biodiversity Management
• Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal): Degree name pending institutional approval.
• Bangor University (Reino Unido): Degree name pending institutional approval.
• Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala (México): Degree name pending institutional approval.

What are we looking for?

Are you passionate about biodiversity and want to learn how to implement conservation and environmental management practices?
Starting in the fall of ’24, the GLOBE Erasmus Mundus Joint Master will recruit up to 25 well-motivated students from all over the world. Candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as long as they can demonstrate academic excellence and a passion for the ecological, social, economic and political challenges posed by contemporary environmental change.

Admission requirements

Candidates must fulfil the following admission requirements:

• B.Sc. degree or equivalent, corresponding to a minimum of 180 European credit (EC) units in accordance with the European credit transfer and accumulation System (ECTS).
• Qualifying Bachelor’s degrees include biology, environmental sciences, forestry, geography, natural resources, political sciences or economy, environmental law– or an equivalent Bachelor’s degree.
• Language proficiency documentation: a minimum of B2 under language proficiency of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required. Exceptions based on nationality or language of education exist (see below). 
• Application complete on time including all required documentation.

Application Documents

The following documents must be uploaded on the online application platform:

• Proof of nationality: Valid passport, ID or similar. Candidates with multiple nationalities must decide at application stage under which nationality they apply.
• Certificate of degree: Copy (authenticated or certified through apostille) of degrees obtained with official seal (i.e. completed higher education studies). If in addition to the BSc you have obtained other degrees (i.e. MSc and/or PhD), please submit a copy of all the degree certificates obtained. Copies should be translated to English (if applicable) by a sworn translator, showing the subjects followed by the applicant and respective marks and credit units obtained.
• Transcript of records: Copy, in English, of the complete transcripts of records of the previous degrees obtained (i.e. the BSc transcript of records, and MSc transcript of records if applicable).
• Certificates attesting language skills: The different types of proof that are accepted to qualify the minimum English B2 level are as follows:
  – International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – minimum score 5.5.
  – TOEFL iBT- at least 72 points.
  – Cambridge – minimum grade B2, minimum score 160.
  – Generally, students who are nationals of a majority English-speaking country or have graduated from a university in a majority English-speaking country (as defined here by the UKVI), or their higher education has been carried out entirely in English, will be exempt from providing an English level certificate. If you are in this position, upload a declaration that this is the case, explaining if this is by virtue of nationality or education, and providing suitable certificates of the later if needed.
• Curriculum Vitae, including work experience and research record (if any)
• Personal statement or motivation letter: Using a maximum of 500 words, state why you are interested in GLOBE and how it could affect your professional career and your life at other levels.
• Declaration of veracity.
• Reference Letters: during the application procedure you will need to provide two reference letters informing on your academic and/professional skills.
• Postgraduate Eligibility Certificate: if your home university does not belong to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), a certificate accrediting that the studies completed grant access to an official postgraduate program in the country of origin, issued by your home university.
• Short Video: a 1-2 minutes short video introducing yourself and explaining why you would like to enrol in the GLOBE Programme.

The application period to the 1st edition (academic year 2025/26) of GLOBE is now open, until the 16th December 2024. Application is made through the online application platform hosted at URJC, the coordinating institution. Both self-funded candidates and scholarship applicants submit their application forms through the same online system. The application system will guide you through the process.
