Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme - 2026/2027
1. Mission of the Programme
The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, launched in 2013 by the Hungarian Government, aims to attract international students to pursue higher education in Hungary and to strengthen the global reach of Hungarian universities.
It offers full-degree and partial study opportunities at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, primarily in English, though other languages are available. Students may also apply for a one-year Hungarian language preparatory course before beginning studies in Hungarian.
2. Available Scholarship Types
2.1 Study Levels
Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships are available for bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s, doctoral, non-degree programmes (preparatory courses) and postgraduate specialist training courses.

2.2 Study Modes
Both full-degree and partial (exchange) study options are offered under the bilateral educational cooperation agreements. Full-degree programmes lead to bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees, while one-year programmes provide non-degree preparatory training.
Partial (exchange) studies last one or two semesters. If they form part of a student’s ongoing degree at their home institution, applicants must be enrolled and hold active student status at a higher education institution outside Hungary, and they may only apply for the study level they are currently pursuing. Upon arrival, the host university may require proof of this student status.
If the partial studies are not part of degree studies abroad—or if the applicant does not have a home institution—student status is not required, unless the Hungarian host institution sets it as an entry requirement.
Partial (exchange) studies can last up to one academic year, must finish by 30 June, and cannot be extended.
3. Provisions Covered by the Scholarship
3.1 Bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s, non-degree programmes and postgraduate specialist training courses.
- Tuition-free education: exemption from the payment of tuition fee

- Accommodation contribution: free dormitory place (depending on institutional capacity) or a contribution of HUF 40,000/month (cca EUR 100) to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period (Please note that if the student does not live in the dormitory, the HUF 40,000/month is a contribution to the rental costs, and in bigger cities – especially in the capital city – this contribution would not cover the full amount of rental costs.)
- Medical insurance: health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation (Act CXXII of 2019 on Entitlements to Social Security Benefits and Funding These Services) 3 and supplementary medical insurance for up to HUF 65,000 (cca EUR 165) a year/person.

Important: Please bear in mind that these provisions are only a contribution to the living expenses of the Scholarship Holders. It means that it does not fully cover all the living costs, and the students need to add their own financial resources to cover all living expenses in Hungary. All applicants are highly advised to check the expected living expenses both in Hungary and the city that they wish to live in before applying; please do check our Cost of Living Calculator by clicking here: http://www.studyinhungary.hu/living-in-hungary/menu/your-costs-of-living.html
