Sapienza has announced a selection procedure for funding Visiting Professors to carry out joint research and teaching activities between January 1, 2026 and December 12, 2026.

I. Eligible types of visits

1. Visits may be submitted for the following types of activities:

• joint research;
• joint teaching.

The proposed visits may include both types of activities, but at the time of application submission, only one option must be selected based on the primary type of activity for the proposed visit.

2. "The following categories of visits may be proposed:

• Category A: visits for periods of 30 days, to be carried out continuously;
• Category B: visits for periods of 90 days, to be carried out continuously.

3. Category A visits can only be proposed if carried out by Visiting Professors considered outstanding researchers or professors, meaning Visiting Professors with an excellent track record, preferably holding international recognitions for achievements in the scientific and/or academic field.

II. Contributions for Visiting Professors

The contribution for the visiting professor is considered to be a reimbursement for travel, hotel, and extra insurance expenses and is awarded as follows:

• € 5.000,00 gross / month for Category A visits;
• € 3.000,00 gross / month for Category B visits.

Please note that, although it is not considered a remuneration contribution is subject to current tax legislation, which means that the sum received is considerably lower than the gross amount stated.*

Sapienza does not provide housing directly. However, you may get in touch with the Department before your arrival for further arrangements regarding affiliated entities if you should be interested.

* The amount is granted as a lumpsum contribution; therefore, no proof of expenses shall be required. However, according to Italian fiscal legislation - even though no contract is foreseen- the contribution concurs to your income. This means that a flat rate of 8.5% regional tax + a 30% income tax shall be deducted at source from the amount. For category B visits for non-EU residents, a further social security tax may apply to the part in excess of 5.000€. In alternative, if an agreement against double taxation is in place, you may request exemption from income tax and social security contributions, and request to be taxed in your country directly according to your fiscal legislation. To this end, all due guidance shall be handed out at a later stage.

III. Application Procedure

Applications follow the principle of “invitation”, therefore they can only be completed directly by a host professor or researcher with at least a type B/Tenure Track contract with Sapienza University. Therefore, your visit must be sponsored and agreed with by a Sapienza host professor at Sapienza. Under their responsibility, your profile and visit programme shall be presented to the Council of the Department for pre-approval as a necessary step for application. After approval, your host professor shall have to fill in the online application form proposing your visit within the due deadline (4 July 2025, 14:00 hs). Following this step, a selection committee shall evaluate all submitted applications. If you are selected for funding, we should get in touch no later than November 2025.

IV. Application and Submission Deadlines

1. "The funding application must be submitted by 2:00 PM on July 4, 2025, exclusively through the online procedure available at the following link https://www.uniroma1.it/it/pagina/bandoprofessori-visitatori

2. Applications must be accompanied by:

• the curriculum vitae of the proposed scholar
• a description of the research and/or teaching activity to be developed jointly
• a copy of the extract of the resolution by which the Department Council commits to hosting the Visiting Professor and granting them, in case of funding, the status of visiting professor or visiting researcher. If the Proponent does not have the material availability of the extract of the Department Council resolution (e.g., if it was issued close to the call’s deadline), they may send a copy via email to [email protected] no later than seven consecutive calendar days after the call deadline

3. You must inform the International Relations Department at the UTP ([email protected]), about your interest in applying to the Visiting Professors of Sapienza Universitá Di Roma, sending us the information about your research/teaching that you will be doing during your stay and the contact person.
